What is WI-FI?

Wi-Fi is the name of the most popular wireless networking technology that uses radio waves to provide wireless high-speed Internet and network connections. The term Wi-Fi is short for “wireless fidelity“. Wi-Fi is simply a trademarked phrase that means IEEE 802.11x. Wi-Fi Technologies are the most emerging technologies of the future.

This wifi technologies standard is developed In 1997 by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) created the first WLAN standard. They called it 802.11 after the name of the group formed to oversee its development. Unfortunately, 802.11 only supported a maximum network bandwidth of 2 Mbps which is too slow for most of the applications. For this reason, ordinary 802.11 wireless products are no longer manufactured.


In July, 1999 IEEE expanded on the original 802.11 standard, creating the 802.11b wifi technologies specification. 802.11b supports bandwidth up to 11 Mbps, comparable to traditional Ethernet.


While 802.11b wifi technologies standard was development, IEEE created a second extension to the original 802.11 standard called 802.11a.

The 802.11b wifi technologies standard gained in popularity much faster than 802.11a, some folks believe that 802.11a was created after 802.11b. In fact, 802.11a was created at the same time. Due to its higher cost, 802.11a is usually found on business networks whereas 802.11b better serves the home market.


In 2002 and 2003 the new technologies standard jump in the market, WLAN products supporting a newer standard called 802.11g. 802.11g attempts to combine the best of both 802.11a and 802.11b.

802.11g supports bandwidth up to 54 Mbps, and it uses the 2.4 GHz frequency for greater range. 802.11g is backward compatible with 802.11b, meaning that 802.11g access points will work with 802.11b wireless network adapters and vice versa.


802.11n (also sometimes known as “Wireless N”) wifi technologies standard was designed to improve on 802.11g in the amount of bandwidth supported by utilizing multiple wireless signals and antennas instead of one.

Industry standards groups ratified 802.11n in 2009 with specifications providing for up to 300 Mbps of network bandwidth. 802.11n also offers somewhat better range over earlier Wi-Fi standards due to its increased signal intensity, and it is backward-compatible with 802.11b/g gear.


The newest generation of Wi-Fi signaling in popular use, 802.11ac utilizes dual-band wireless technology, supporting simultaneous connections on both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi bands. 802.11ac offers backward compatibility to 802.11b/g/n and bandwidth rated up to 1300 Mbps on the 5 GHz band plus up to 450 Mbps on 2.4 GHz.

802.11ac and its other version are the new wifi technologies.

Mobile wifi technologies are the marketing term for wireless Internet access through a portable modem, mobile phone, USB wireless modem, tablet or other mobile devices. The first wireless Internet access became available in 1991 as part of the second generation (2G) of mobile phone technology. Higher speeds became available in 2001 and 2006 as part of the third (3G) and fourth (4G) generations. In 2011, 90% of the world’s population lived in areas with 2G coverage, while 45% lived in areas with 2G and 3G coverage. Mobile broadband uses the spectrum of 225 MHz to 3700 MHz.

We are seeing this year’s contention between LTE and WiFi in the 5GHz band rapidly move toward resolution. Even with changes in data costs, LTE remains limited in spectrum, costs 10 times more to deploy, and is generally billed on a per-byte basis. WiFi remains cheaper to deploy, provides faster operating speeds, and, in almost all cases, is free to the end user. And, while LTE works well outside, it falls apart rapidly as the user enters the core of any building. WiFi can be designed to work consistently throughout internal spaces.

Consumers will expect Wi-Fi to be free, or almost free:

The bar has largely been set – with the exception of some “expense account” venues like hotels, customers will expect to have Wi-Fi included as part of the overall service.

Public Wi-Fi will get better:

With growing customer demand and expectations, public hot spots will need to upgrade their infrastructure to move beyond the initial “trial” phase of many public deployments.

Next Generation Wi-Fi Monetization:

With public Wi-Fi becoming essentially free, businesses will look to new monetization models, like advertising, data analytics and advanced location-based services, to recover Wi-Fi network costs.
